Dubai Desert Safari in Summer — An Honest Guide
The question we get asked most between May and September is "do desert safaris still run in summer?" The answer is yes — tours operate year-round in Dubai. But should you book one in summer? That depends entirely on when you go and what you expect. Here is the honest version, not the tourist brochure version.
What summer heat actually feels like in the desert
Let us be direct about the numbers. Dubai summer temperatures regularly hit 45-50°C in the daytime desert. The sand surface can reach 70°C. Direct sunlight feels physically aggressive — not uncomfortable, aggressive. If you have only experienced 30°C European summers, Dubai summer heat is a completely different category.
However — and this is the important part — the desert cools down significantly after 5:00 PM. By sunset (around 7:00 PM in summer), temperatures drop to 35-38°C. Still hot, but manageable. By 9:00 PM, it can feel almost pleasant at 30-32°C. This is why evening safaris still work in summer.
Evening safari in summer — what changes
The evening desert safari with BBQ dinner runs year-round including peak summer. Here is what changes compared to winter:
- Pickup time shifts later — 3:30-4:00 PM instead of 3:00 PM because sunset is later in summer (around 7:00 PM vs 5:30 PM in winter).
- The first 30-60 minutes after pickup are the hottest part of the experience. The vehicle is air-conditioned, so the drive to the desert is comfortable. But the transition from AC vehicle to outdoor dune bashing is a shock.
- Dune bashing is fine — you are inside the AC vehicle. The windows stay up and the AC runs during the drive across the dunes.
- The sunset photo stop is hotter than winter — bring water and sunscreen. The golden hour light is actually more dramatic in summer due to humidity haze.
- Camp activities start in the heat but finish in comfort. By the time dinner and entertainment start (after sunset), the temperature is dropping fast. The BBQ dinner under the stars at 8:30 PM is genuinely pleasant even in July.
- Humidity is higher in summer (40-60% vs 20-30% in winter). This affects how the heat feels — more oppressive than dry winter heat.
Morning safari in summer — the smart choice
If you are visiting Dubai between May and September, the sunrise desert safari is genuinely the better option. Here is why:
- Departure at 5:00-5:30 AM — temperatures are 28-32°C. Genuinely comfortable.
- The desert at dawn in summer is stunning. The air is still, the light is golden, and the sand is cool enough to walk on barefoot.
- Dune bashing is better in the morning — the sand is firmer after overnight cooling, which gives the tyres more grip and makes the ride smoother.
- You are back at your hotel by 8:00-9:00 AM before the heat becomes unbearable. The rest of your day is free for indoor activities — Dubai Mall, Ski Dubai, aquariums.
- Fewer tourists. Most summer visitors book the evening safari by default, so morning safaris are quieter and more exclusive.
For adventure seekers in summer, combine the sunrise safari with quad biking or a dune buggy ride. The early morning is the only time of day when driving a vehicle through the desert is comfortable in summer.
Survival tips for summer desert safaris
If you book an evening safari in summer, these are not optional suggestions — they are essential:
- Hydrate aggressively. Drink 1-2 litres of water in the 2 hours before pickup. The tour provides water at the camp, but you need to arrive already hydrated. Dehydration in desert heat happens faster than you expect.
- Sunscreen SPF 50+ applied 30 minutes before pickup. Reapply at the camp. The desert sun at 5:00 PM in summer is still extremely strong.
- Wear light colours. Dark clothing absorbs heat. White, beige, and light pastels make a real difference.
- Wear a hat or cap. Essential for the photo stops and camp arrival when you are outside the AC vehicle.
- Bring a light layer for the drive back. Going from 38°C outside to the AC vehicle at 20°C can cause chills. A light cardigan or scarf works.
- Do not wear heavy shoes. Your feet will overheat. Light sport sandals with heel straps or breathable trainers are ideal.
- Eat a light meal before the tour. Heavy food plus heat plus dune bashing is a recipe for nausea.
Who should NOT do a summer desert safari
We want to be honest about who should consider skipping or modifying the experience:
- People with heart conditions or heat sensitivity — the temperature shock between AC and outdoor environment is significant.
- Very young children (under 3) — they cannot regulate body temperature as effectively as adults. If you must bring a toddler in summer, book the morning safari only.
- Anyone who has never experienced 40°C+ heat — if this is your first time in extreme heat, a desert safari adds sun exposure and physical activity on top. Acclimatize for 2-3 days in the city first.
- Pregnant women — the combination of heat, dehydration risk, and bumpy dune bashing is not recommended in any season, but especially in summer.
Summer prices and availability
Summer is off-peak season for Dubai tourism, which works in your favour:
- Prices are the same year-round — most operators (including us) do not raise or lower prices by season.
- Availability is easier — you can often book same-day in summer, whereas winter requires 2-3 days advance booking.
- Smaller group sizes on shared tours — fewer tourists means a more intimate camp experience.
- Some operators offer special summer packages with modified timings (later departure, faster camp turnaround).
The bottom line
A summer desert safari is absolutely doable and still enjoyable — but you have to plan around the heat, not ignore it. Morning safaris are the smart choice between May and September. Evening safaris work too, but expect the first hour to be hot.
