What to Wear on a Dubai Desert Safari
Choosing the right clothes for a desert safari is simpler than you might think. The desert is not a formal environment — comfort and practicality matter more than style. Here is what to wear, what to avoid, and how to adjust for summer and winter.
The basics - what works for any season
- Lightweight, loose-fitting clothes - cotton t-shirts, linen shirts, or moisture-wicking fabrics. Avoid tight jeans or anything that restricts movement.
- Comfortable trousers or long shorts - you will be sitting on the ground at the camp and climbing in and out of a 4x4. Shorts are fine for men and women.
- Closed-toe shoes or sturdy sandals - sport sandals with a heel strap work well. Avoid flip-flops (they fall off during dune bashing) and heels (useless in sand).
- A light scarf or shawl - useful as a head cover in the sun, a sand shield if it is windy, or a wrap when temperatures drop after sunset.
- Sunglasses - essential. The desert glare is intense, especially during afternoon departures.
Summer (April–September) — heat management
Summer temperatures in Dubai can exceed 45°C during the day, though evening safaris depart in the late afternoon when it cools to 35-38°C. Still hot. Wear:
- Ultra-light fabrics — avoid dark colours that absorb heat. White, beige, and light pastels are ideal.
- Sunscreen (SPF 50+) — apply before pickup. The desert sun is much stronger than it feels.
- A hat or cap — the camp has shade, but the dune bashing stops and photo points are fully exposed.
- Bring a light layer for the drive back — the air-conditioned 4x4 can feel cold after being in the heat.
Winter (October–March) — layering up
Desert evenings in winter can drop to 12-18°C after sunset. Many visitors are surprised by how cold it gets. Bring:
- A light jacket or hoodie — you will need it at the camp after sunset.
- Long trousers — more comfortable than shorts when the temperature drops.
- A warm layer you can tie around your waist during dune bashing — you will be warm during the activity but cold at the camp later.
What to leave at the hotel
- Expensive jewellery — sand gets everywhere and clasps can open during dune bashing.
- White trainers you care about — they will turn orange from the Lahbab red sand.
- Large bags — bring a small crossbody or phone pouch. The camp has no secure storage.
- Heavy camera gear (unless photography is your main goal) — a smartphone is easier for dune bashing. Bring a proper camera only for the camp and sunset stops.
What the tour provides
You do not need to bring water, food, or entertainment. The evening desert safari includes water and soft drinks on arrival, Arabic coffee and dates, a full BBQ buffet dinner, and all camp activities. Just bring yourself, a phone or camera, and sun protection.
